Principal’s Message

High School Principal / College Placement Counselor

High School Principal's Message

Welcome to SCCS, a highly prestigious and respected institution whose students, parents and faculty are privileged to form part of it. With privileges come important responsibilities. As educators it is our responsibility to provide a challenging, competitive and stimulating academic environment that provides conditions for our learners to develop important 21st century learning skills to be applied in real life situations.

Furthermore, SCCS strives to educate beyond the mind and install in the hearts of our learners those values and principles necessary for them to become caring citizens who are aware of the social environment and other people's needs. Kindness, respect, appreciation and integrity are key concepts we expect all students, teachers and parents to follow.

Academic knowledge, interest-based learning and community involvement are complementary pillars to educate the “whole” human being. As members of the SCCS family, it is your responsibility to act as mature, educated, respectful, appreciative, accountable and determined pillars of our community. SCCS students are expected to develop leadership qualities that will allow them to become spirited and proactive twenty-first century leaders, conscientious citizens and human beings with values and principles.

As our educational programs focus on excellence in the acquisition of our target language, English, SCCS has high expectations regarding the use of English on campus and in school-related activities

Middle School Principal's Message

The middle school division recognizes the unique characteristics of the adolescent learner in grades 6-8 and is committed to the development of academic and life skills. SCCS is a college preparatory school and in the middle school high academic standards are expected in all classes. The values of Respect, Appreciation, Integrity, Flexibility and Kindness guide school and community behavior.

Over a dozen educators are involved in the instruction in middle school and meet monthly to plan and organize special activities, revise and improve curriculum and to develop strategies that will develop the character and academic skills of our middle school students.

At SCCS there is a strong commitment to the support of the students and their individual needs. Learning support, ESL, SSL and counseling are offered to students in need. Life skills and values are incorporated into the Advisory period and Second Step class. All teachers are available on Tuesday and Thursday for any student who needs to remediate their grade, make up work due to an absence or would like extra help on a concept that they may need help with. The middle school staff is dedicated to seeing all students achieve success throughout the school year.

All middle school students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities to strengthen their interpersonal and leadership skills. Students may participate in National Junior Honor Society, Student Government (StuCo), Junior Varsity Athletics (basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading and track and field) and community service clubs. The middle school staff with the support of the Mother’s club offers a myriad of events to promote learning and school spirit; such as the SCCS Fun Run, the Halloween Celebration, Talent Show, Spelling Bee, Math Bowl, Mini Olympics, Friendship Games, Knowledge Bowl and other events throughout the school year.

The SCCS middle school staff is confident that by working together as a team and with both students and parents, each student will be successful and prepared for the rigors of high school.

Elementary School Principal's Message

Hello, my name is Dr. Eric Olsen and I am the principal of the elementary school at Santa Cruz Cooperative School. I want to welcome you to our website.

The elementary school at SCCS is a wonderful place for students to learn and grow together. We have an amazing team of experienced and dedicated teachers that work hard every day to ensure that our students have the best educational experience possible. We are proud of our small class sizes that allow students to receive the individualized attention that they deserve. In addition to our small class sizes, each class enjoys the help of one of our incredible assistant teachers.

We have a rigorous curriculum that provides our students with a world-class education. All of our instruction is aligned with the Common Core State Standards from the United States. We feature readers and writers workshops, along with Leveled Literacy Intervention that meets the students at their level and helps them grow their literacy skills at an appropriate pace. We recently adopted Eureka Math that builds a deep understanding of early numeracy skills and problem solving. Our students also receive high-quality, engaging instruction in Science, Social Studies, and a variety of “specials” classes like music, PE, technology, and art. We also help students develop academic skills in Spanish so that they are truly bilingual scholars.

We also place a high value on social-emotional learning at SCCS in order to help students develop to their fullest potential as whole children. We use restorative practices in resolving conflicts. All classes have morning meetings in which children can share and connect with their teachers and peers. We adhere to the principles of PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) to help incentivise and reward good behavior. We also have adopted Second Step to help teach students about topics like bullying prevention and child safety.

Our well-rounded and engaging curriculum prepares children well for success in middle school, high school and beyond. Perhaps most importantly, we make learning fun so that our students are excited to be lifelong learners.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at eolsen@sccs.edu.bo, I am always happy to talk with parents and families about our amazing school.

Respectfully,

Dr. Eric M. Olsen
